Derek Lam Elsa Python Clutch

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

picture-55

I have been in love with Derek Lam and his creations, since last spring/summer ‘08 Tod’s bags. His own bags are just as wonderful and lust-worthy too though. This clutch in python is so much better than the plain leather version and the price isn’t exactly bad compared to other plain leather bags that I was browsing. Although I might just be getting desensitized to prices of designer goods. hmm…

Anyway, this is a sexy clutch for anyone’s needs. And it is huge! 6.5″ x 10.5″ x 3″ and come with multiple pockets inside and out to hide/store whatever you need. I only have two clutches in my closet at the moment and neither one exotic, so this might be a good one to start on. ;) Available at Barneys for $1,450.

Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

Need a book that speaks to every Shopping Addicts’ heart? Or is it too much to say, at least in part, every woman? I devoured this book over the weekend in the midst of unpacking and I just loved it! Of course, I am behind on the times yet again, but the movie adaptation is coming out February 13, starring Isla Fisher as the spunky Rebecca Bloomwood. I loved her in the Wedding Crashers, and she fits perfectly as our heroine in Confessions of a Shopaholic. So, no more waiting, go buy the book before the movie premiers. I’m already planning on diving into the rest of the series as soon as I get a chance. You can buy through Barnes and Noble for $12.60 or if you finally became a member it only costs $11.34. See? I’m already thinking just like Becky!

True Blood: End of Season One

Monday, November 24th, 2008

My show, True Blood, ended last night :( . I had thought about doing weekly summaries, but I decided to wait until…surprise! Season Two comes out next summer. I figured that would give everyone a chance to watch the re-runs, dvds, or finally get HBO in their house. Plus you have over six months to read all of Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse novels in the meantime. I have only mentioned it a gazillion times (or two actually). I know some people are getting weirded out about the Twilight movie, and the True Blood series, and feeling a little supernatural/vampire overload, but let me tell you to just sit back, relax, and enjoy all of it! The Twilight movie was awesome, I love Stephenie Meyer. Charlaine Harris has great stories with feisty characters with her humor and wit and Alan Ball did an incredible job of transfering Charlaine’s vision to the screen (and finding a super hot actor to play Eric Northman, who is pictured above on the right sigh). I love Pam too, think “soccer mom/librarian who became a vampire with  a lot of dry humor”. So, I’m not sure when the DVD is coming, but you would be wise to get on the ball and get ready for Season Two and grab some books while you’re at it. And go see Twilight. That’s all for now. :D

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

Monday, November 24th, 2008

This is my random Monday post. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy has been out for eons and it still is as hilarious now as it was then. Douglas Adams is a riot and his humor will make you laugh out loud at this story about an earthling who is thrusted out into the universe after Earth has been destroyed. I am not really into Science Fiction, but I can always appreciate good humor, and who doesn’t love British humor? One of the greatest literary classics (oh yes, yes it is!) and you can purchase through Barnes and Noble for $14.95 for the anniversary hardcover edition. Also, be sure to read the rest of this five book trilogy. Yes…five books in a trilogy…and the humor begins. The Restaurant at the End of the Universe (#2), Life, the Universe, and Everything (#3), So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish (#4), and Mostly Harmless (#5).

How to: Your Wardrobe and Closet

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

I know how overwhelming shopping and creating a timeless wardrobe can be, or a wardrobe that reflects you. There are just so many things out there to buy, but then you feel like you can’t find anything in your closet when it comes time to throw something on. I found three books that do wonders for putting shopping and building a closet into perspective. It will not feel so overwhelming and you will realize that as long as you have a few key pieces in any one category, then you are good to go! It really is simple once you boil it down to a few key things:

  • Don’t buy anything unless it can go with at least two things in your closet. or something like that…
  • Don’t buy anything that is on sale if you would not consider it at retail. Very good point!
  • Spend money on the classic pieces that you can wear for more than a few seasons (i.e. a nice suit, skirts and jacket separates, nice cashmere sweaters, etc). One trendy handbag or pair of stilettos should not eat into your entire clothing budget for the year.
  • Only buy clothes, etc that flatter your figure and coloring. Don’t you dare go out and buy something because it looked good on so-and-so.

Obviously, there are many more practical points, but every woman should spend an afternoon and throw all of their clothes on the bed to reorganize and take account of everything they have. It will make it easier to weed out stuff you don’t wear and probably never will wear again and make more room in valuable closet space for pieces that you need! I am getting ready to move into our new house in a few weeks so I’m waiting to reorganize my wardrobe then. You will feel better after reading these books that help facilitate the process of not being overwhelmed in a world where there are so many d%#m choices.

The Lucky Manual and Shopping Guide are amazing! I love the magazine for its focus on affordable, chic pieces, but the books really send the message home. This is what inspired me to focus on my own wardrobe. And it never hurts to dive into Shop Your Closet either for basics on organizing…like how to store those super-nice cashmere sweaters that you bought. Just click on the images to see where to buy, etc. All through Barnes and Noble.

Undead and Unwed by MaryJanice Davidson

Friday, November 14th, 2008

The “Betsy Taylor” series by MaryJanice Davidson is one of the most hilarious series I have come across. Light and carefree, it is a great book to dive into on vacation or to escape your family over the holidays ;) . Undead and Unwed is the first in the series following Elizabeth “Betsy” Taylor after she is killed in a car accident on her 30th birthday. Shoe-addict extraordinaire and former model, and perhaps slight airhead, she apparently is the prophesied Queen of the Undead. You will laugh out loud at Davidson’s humor and scenarios. Buy through Barnes and Noble for $7.99.

Color Me Beautiful by Carole Jackson

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

One thing that I did get from my grandmother was one of the most helpful fashion books ever made: Color Me Beautiful by Carole Jackson. Have you ever wondered why orange does NOT look good on you? Or perhaps why you favor blacks and whites instead of baby pink and blue? You must find your season! It makes shopping so much easier and so much easier to say NO when shopping for something that might fit just perfectly but just doesn’t show your natural beauty. Sure the book is a little outdated, but the foundation is and always will be applicable no matter what decade. Personally, I am a Summer. Hazel eyes, dark blond hair, cool fair skin. Thank you Irish ancestors! Depending on whether or not your skin tone is cool or warm, and the variations in your hair color and eyes, you could be an Autumn, Winter, or Spring as well. All you have to do is take a test and be completely honest about your features (i.e. what is your natural color, not the flame-red color that you dyed it last week). Take the color test here. Once you find your season, order your seasonal color palette to carry in your purse so you can use it while you’re shopping so you don’t accidently end up buying a peach dress when you look better in pinks with blue undertones. Same with make-up and jewelry. You will look better in gold or silver jewerly depending on your season. So what are you waiting for? Stop dressing in Summer pastels if you are  Winter, and get out of that orange dress if you are not an Autumn. Buy Color Me Beautiful through Barnes and Noble for $17.95. You can order your Seasonal Color Swatches through Carole Jackson’s website. Just make sure to find your season before doing so!

Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Hailed as the next J.K. Rowling, Stephenie Meyer would be an unlikely candidate considering how she started. A Mormon house-wife of three young sons started writing down a story based on a dream she had, and that story ended up turning into four novels and one blockbuster movie. How inspirational! I read and loved all four of her books and currently have her latest The Host in my To-Be-Read pile. The books are in the young adult section but don’t let that stop you. The story is, above all, a love story weaved through four books that will make you love her characters and hurt for them when they are in trouble. The Twilight Movie debuts 11.21.08 so you have some time to at least get a head start on her first novel, Twlight. Buy through Barnes and Noble for $8.90.

True Blood

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

True Blood debuted last month on HBO. I had been anxiously waiting for this TV series to finally come out after the writer’s strike, and now that it has, I am on my couch every Sunday night with husband, dog, and hot cup of tea in hand. I am an avid fan of Charlaine Harris, whose Southern Vampire Series is what inspired Alan Ball to convert it to television. If you love murder-mysteries, humor mixed in with the darker side, and a little bit of romance, True Blood has taken what I loved about the books to a whole new level. Not that the HBO series is exactly like the books, you would enjoy reading the first novel Dead until Dark by Harris while watching this first season of True Blood. Each chapter coincides with an episode, and although there are a few changes, it will help shine light on future episodes and plots (shhhh.) It is going to be one crazy ride. Call your cable service, add HBO, and tune in tonight at 9 pm (EST) and let me know what you think. Maybe even pick up one of Charlaine Harris’ books while you’re at it.
