The Mermaid by Howard Pyle

After a year of having every piece of artwork boxed up while we built our new home, it was a complete joy to finally pull out all our pieces again and put them on the wall. One sentimental print that my mom had framed for me when I was a little girl was The Mermaid by Howard Pyle. I didn’t know that until I took the print in to get re-framed and realized that the matte board had leeched some of the color off my print after all these years. I googled until I found it, read the interesting back story on it (it was actually Howard Pyle’s last piece that was apparently left unfinished when he died, so his students at the time finished what they could), and am thinking of buying a reproduction oil on canvas version of it. The original painting is 100 years old! What I particularly like about it is that it’s sensual, beautiful, and soothing all together, yet mysterious. Plus, this is much different than what I see in other people’s houses, or even in my own house. You can buy through 1st-Art-Gallery in various sizes including the original size in oil on canvas. And I have been told oil on canvas is the safest option if you want to put a piece of art in your bathroom. My framed print probably wouldn’t last very long with all the steam and humidity, especially since I’m a big believer in daily baths. It’s good for the soul!

A Happy Sunshine Day by George Rodrigue

George Rodrigue started a cult following the moment he first painted a Blue Dog on canvas. I’m not sure what exactly brought about the frenzy, but I love it. I don’t have $22,000 (starting price) to pay for an original, and the copies aren’t exactly cheap either, but I guess that’s just what it costs to have a piece of the blue dog. I did buy the 2008 planner to satisfy my urges, but will that be enough? You can purchase the above silk-screen through George Rodrigue’s website for $1,200.

What is almost as good as a Great Dane?

Great Dane on canvas, duh!

I found DJ Rogers, an artist from California who loves painting dogs (and sometimes cats) in watercolor. I have never bought a piece of Great Dane artwork before, but I have never seen one that I would want on my wall until this piece, titled “Black Great Dane” popped up in front of me. I just can’t decide if I want it on canvas or archival-quality paper. You can purchase through the Artist’s website or Ebay store.

This one also caught my eye, “Great Dane Sunset”Paintings are supposed to make you happy or peaceful, or at least mine do.

Maxfield Parrish Artwork

Artwork is a fun hobby that my husband and I both share. I even dabble in it from time to time, but I also like collecting pieces that I fall in love with.  I grew up surrounded by Maxfield Parrish prints and coffee-table books all over my house, my mother loved his work. His paintings are mesmerizing. Whether they are landscapes or his Fairy Tale pieces, I just love the colors and the depth. You can purchase his prints through Art.com.
